As some of you know, I just moved across the country for a new job.

My first day, before I even unpacked.... I went out to buy a new Plasma TV... even though someone offered me their old school television!

tv.jpg image by ambrosialea

Why did I do this?!?

#1 - The bulky old TV would have been too much trouble to move, which leads me to ...

#2 - My new job requires me to move around a lot and a Plasma TV is portable (much lighter and smaller)

#3 - The old TV only had a coaxial cable connection and not the hookups for my Playstation 2.

#4 - I want High Definition capabilities because I plan on getting a Playstation 3 soon.

#5 - I don’t want to be the last person I know to get a plasma TV. (That brings back memories of when I kept listening to my cassette tapes long after everyone else switched to cds.)

#6 - Widescreen is so much better for movies

#7 - Better picture so my eyes wont strain while trying to relax after a long day at work.

#8 - Easier to turn TV so can be viewed from anywhere in the room

#9 - Plasma is not crazy expensive anymore! It is now affordable and worth switching over rather than buying a television which will soon be obsolete.

#10 - Being in a small town away from everyone and everything I know.... I had no doubt I was going to watch a lot of TV! What else did I have to do?

Once I had the TV, I found out there were even more reasons to go plasma:

#11 - People coming over every evening to play video games on my TV (word spread at work)

#12 - My TV so I get to pick what we watch (Remote Control Queen)

#13 - Roommate willing to do the dishes if I let her watch my TV!
So I thought I would be miserable in this little town, but I am having lots of fun. I am making a bunch of new friends! I would like to think it is because of my awesome personality... but it is more likely my Plasma TV.

The Media were just showing us what government officials were saying. They did not question, because that would be unpatriotic.  We put our trust in the government because we wanted to stand as one, especially after 9/11. Our patriotism was exploited.

But the government officials are not sending their brothers and sisters to the front lines. Like many middle class Americans, I have family in the military and I would not want them in harms way unless our country is in real danger.

Perhaps the reporters should have actually investigated their stories, but it is so much easier to just relay the lies...

The media is part of the checks and balances that keep this country in check. Unfortunately, they did not do their jobs when it came to the information leading up to Iraq.

At the time, I was watching hours of C-span showing UN meetings and Congress hearings. Raw footage was the only way you could get the real story because the media was not covering it.  I knew that they didnt have real evidence about WMD's, but the media would ridicule anyone who might suggest this. I was called a crazy conspiracy theorist. A conspiracy theory is something that cannot be supported by strong evidence. It was them who had a conspiracy theory about Iraq stockpiling WMD's.

The media wasnt doing their job. PBS did a story on it (too late!)

May this Ring symbolize how I really feel about U

When you see that the Diamond Ring on display at your local jewlery store, you might think of it as a symbol of love, happiness, and wealth.  Some see it as a symbol of  civil conflicts, poverty, misery, and criminal or terrorist activities.

Platinum,Luxury,Stone,Gem,Diamond,Ring,Jewelry,Gold,Gold,white gold,Engagement Ring

Maybe you have heard about "Blood Diamonds" a.k.a. "Conflict Diamonds"- If you are not familiar with this, I recommend you see the movie "Blood Diamond" featuring Leonardo DeCaprio. It will give you a little background on the subject. "Lord of War" also touched on the subject.

In some African countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, profits from the unregulated diamond trade are used to fund armed conflicts. As a result, tens of thousands of civilians have over the past years been killed or tortured and millions have been displaced.

Over four million people were killed during the ethnic genocide that occured in Zaire during a seven-year civil war was funded largely by conflict diamonds . Children have been forced to join militias and even kill their own families. Women are raped. The hands of victims have been cut off so they can not work to find diamonds for the enemy. Men, Women, and children are forced to mine for Diamonds at the end of a gun. The gun was obtained by trading for diamonds.

Representatives of al-Qaeda  purchased huge amounts of uncut diamonds in the months leading up to the World Trade Center attack on 9/11. The Al Qaeda network made millions of dollars in the past few years from the illicit sale of diamonds mined by rebels in Sierra Leone.

In November 2002, diamond producing and diamond trading countries launched a global system, called the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), to control the trade of rough diamonds and to assure consumers that the diamonds they purchase have not helped to finance violent conflicts.

The United States does not periodically or regularly inspect rough diamond imports or exports, a control feature that allows participants to match the contents of the rough diamond parcels and Kimberley Process certificates and deters illicit trade in rough diamonds. The United States does not have an effective system for confirming the receipt of rough diamond import shipments, a control feature that allows participants to track shipments and prevent their diversion.

A diamond that is bought for $20 from a conflict area could be sold in the USA or the UK for over $100,000.  The huge markup would be motivation for many individuals or companies to purchase conflict diamonds. However, the current system in the USA/UK is self-regulated. Therefore, the company is in charge of itself in making sure that it is following the law (not buying conflict diamonds or forging documents for the diamonds origin)

So remember next time you want to buy a diamond, the real cost may be more than two months salary....

DONT BUY DIAMONDS (BUY FAKES IF YOU HAVE TO)! SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT "BLOOD DIAMONDS" AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME!

Idea #1:
Political Dolls

Besides making buttons or T-shirts, I think a fun political campaign idea would be to design satire dolls. You can dress them up however you like and make them say crazy things when you pull their strings. They can be made of any media, from plastic to paper. I am sure vodoo dolls would be very popular too.

Dolls May include Warnings like:

May inflate the National Debt

Brain Not Included

Guaranteed war starter

May Increase Taxes

Idea #2:
Political Satire Product Ads
camouflage-makeup.jpg

With all of the movie stars having their own product lines, did you ever think about what political product lines would be like? Kerry selling flip flops? Bush selling bull crap? You decide by creating an advertisement for a political product!

Idea #3:
Artwork Inspired By Current Events

Bansky

"Soldier with Spraycan" (Royalty Free)

People have always created artwork that is inspired by what is going on in the world around them. From Edvard Munch's "The Scream" to Bansky's "Soldier with Spraycan",the artist has expressed their thoughts and feelings without speaking a word. Years later, people can just look at their art to know what were the important issues at that time.

For this brickfish campaign, create a piece of art that is inspired by today's issues. You can draw it, paint it, sculpt it, make a collage from newspaper cuttings... any way you want to get your point across.

Idea #4:
Political Cartoons

They are in every newspaper, so I am sure you have read many political comics. Have you ever tried to create one? For this campaign, you would create a political comic that shows what you care about from a humorous point of view. Address hard hitting issues with laughs and people will remember what you are trying to say.

Idea #5:
Letter of Action

Writing

Have you ever written a government offical requesting action? From complaining about raising taxes to the need of increased school funding, your letter can make a difference. Is there an issue locally or nationally that you think needs more attention? Well, here is your chance to write that letter and enter it into a blog campaign. Who knows, maybe you will actually send it too!

FACT: A 100 lb woman in narrow high heels exerts more pressure-per-square inch when walking than a 6,000 lb elephant in bare feet!

Image from: http://www.nyu.edu

This blog is about those evil torture devices that you may know as stiletto high heels with pointed toes. They force much of your body weight into a squeezing point. They also require quite a balancing act which even with practice, can not come close to someone using your entire foot. How many times have you seen someone in these things fall on their face? I just saw someone fall at their high school graduation on the way up the stairs to get their diploma. That was embarassing.

Ladies: you were not made to be walking around on your toes all day! You have an entire foot for a reason! How is wearing these every day any different than the old Chinese tradition of foot binding ? Because it does no permanent damage? Think again! Ask any foot or back doctor and they will tell you different.

Ashanti, R&B star photo from http://www.ashantithisisme.com/

"I have two bones in my foot which are growing out of place from wearing pointy shoes" -Ashanti

I have an aunt that wears these type of shoe every day for the last 20 years. She is always taking them off at the table because they are uncomfortable, and it makes me want to loose my lunch. Not just because they are feet, but because they are the grossest feet I have ever seen. They have become almost claw-like. Her toes have deformed to be lumpy knobs pointed down and toward the center of her foot. Her middle toe appears to be the longest, but I think that is just because it is the least bent.  She also has a lot of back problems she complains about, but refuses to stop wearing those ugly shoes anyway.

Women always buy these type of shoes a few sizes too large so that the foot is not forced as hard into the pointed toe. Then that unused part of the shoe starts to bend upward as they walk. Once the shoe has been worn a few times, it starts to resemble that of an elf.

elf shoes.
Is This Attractive to you?

So why do women wear these torture devices? I have heard "because men like them".... Oh, sure....but they like any kind of heel, it doesnt have to be the terrible pointed toe skinny heel combination! How about some round toe chunky heels or wedges? Please the guys without hurting your feet!

I call for a boycott!
I ask that you do not vote for this blog. Just spread the word about the evils of these shoes.- Thanks

Could he answer my questions 10?

Humans are rather stupid... so they are the perfect subject for the next edition of "How To Annoy Your Neighbor" by that witty alien from Planet X-g7. You have not lived until you have confused a town with crop formations!
Have fun, but try not to accidently start a war!

I was sure that I was not going to enter this campaign.....

I was positive that I wouldnt see anything that would impress me.....

I thought Metropark was just another clothing catalog website.....

Then something happened that made my heart jump into my throat.....

something that made me forget to breathe.....

I saw IT!!!!

It instantly reminded me of the work of my favorite artist, Salvador Dali.... but with a modern twist. (For those of you who do not know Dali, maybe you have seen his melting clocks?). So much emotion is expressed in the work. It is both beautiful and bazaar.

I could stare at it for hours, imagining a life within its surreal world. I feel that this shows how everything in the universe is connected. I think this piece would inspire me artistically and emotionally. It reminds me how my actions effect others and makes me want to do more for other people. It could motivate me every day for the rest of my life.

"I want this print" is all I could think.  When I clicked to read the details, it said it was an original ! This piece is the actual canvas where two talented artists (Mars-1 & Nome Edonna) expressed their souls. Amazing!

I know exactly where I would put it too, in my living room above the black leather couch. It uses the same colors as the rest of my decor, strange coincidence. I am brought to tears as I try to picture it in my home, it is so unbelievable.

I question if I deserve to have such a piece of artwork. It should be in a museum where everyone can see it. Yet if it is going to be in a private collection, I do not think anyone could appriciate it more....

yes, I know that they would only pay for $250 of the $1000 price tag, but I am thinking this would be a great graduation gift to myself. I would rather have this than to go on spring break!

The following was free verse inspired while sitting outside listening to The Beatles

I close my eyes to absorb it all
but it absorbs me
sounds of rich tone and rhythm
I need not listen any more
the music and I are one
I do not feel my body
yet I am moving with the notes
I do not hear the song
I am the melody
this form has no boundaries
sound echoes without walls
I become the universe
everything within my reach
I feel close to heaven and God
then abruptly it all ends
what once took up the cosmos
now in a tiny body
with shaky hands and longing heart

Thoughts on the edge of insanity
Feelings from beyond all thinking
Emotions not explained or questioned
With a sudden rise or sinking.
An unexpected rush of joy
Coming from out of the blue
Excitement builds from nothing
With no place to go to.
The sudden surge of energy
It's coming out in song.
While I'm singing loud and proud
I start to dance along.
Some may think I'm strange
Always on a natural high.
but if you were me and this happy
would you question why?
I will not hide my feelings
Never mind what others say.
They are just some crazy people
who think a different way.
