This is my beautiful mother Socorro. I see her as a very brave woman for having gone through what she did. She went from having a rough childhood, to a marriage filled with pain. But my mother always made sure that she did the best she could for us. And I am very grateful to her for that.
As a young child growing up in Mexico, both her mother and her father neglected her. And she was forced to move in with her father's sisters. My mother did not have the carefree lifestyle that many children in the US had. Everything from having no presents at Christmas, to the lack of affection by her aunts. My mother saw this as normal everyday life. It was school and then come straight home. Do the chores that women are supposed to do, and go to bed. The rules had to be followed or else she and her sister would suffer the harsh consequences or going against them.
This continued onto her teenage years. She was not allowed to go out with friends. And most importantly no dates. At the time, she began working at the age of 17. The new rule was work, then come straight home to give your check to her guardians. Still, she had dreams and aspirations of one day becoming an elementary school teacher. She also wanted to get married in hopes of leaving this restrictive life. My mother continued on and prayed for a better future.
But marriage proved to be harder then she thought. With an unfaithful husband, and a growing family. My mother had no idea what to do next. Soon after her husband's behavior diminished, the main focus was her children. She had six babies, four boys and two girls. She promised herself that they would be loved unconditionally. And not suffer like she did as a child, despite the fact that one of her aunts shared the house with us.
In December of 1997, my mother lost her oldest daughter due to illness. She was absolutely devastated as any mother would be after losing a child. She said to all of us, the day after my sister passed on, that she wanted all of us to be at her bedside when her time came to leave this world. And now that wish would go unfulfilled. She was depressed and grieved for a very long time. But soon after, she decided that we still needed her, and moved on for us.
On January of 2005, her aunt passed away, which broke my mother's heart. Even though she had a tough childhood as a result of being raised by this woman. Her aunt was the closest person she had to a mother. Having cared for this woman when she became ill. Which consisted of taking her to the doctor, making sure she took her medication, making sure she ate, was changed, had her blood sugar checked. And on top of that, having her sister and cousin criticized her every move. It was a huge weight on my mother's shoulders. And that is what made it harder for her when she had to put her in a retirement home. My mother cried, but she had to do it. Her health was not in the greatest shape. And all the care workload, even with my help, proved to be too much for her. So when her aunt passed on, all the feelings of losing my sister came back.
Today, it's not easy for me to say that things are still not very happy for my mother. She suffers from type 2 diabetes, and a mild case of depression. It brakes my heart to see her unhappy. So it would mean so much to me to show her how important she is to me. And also how much I care and love her.

The inmate on death row was scheduled to be put to death by firing squad the follow morning. Throughout the day, the prison guards were being very nice to him. But when they asked him if he wanted something specific for his last meal, he said he didn't want anything special. When they asked if there was something special he wanted to do, he said nothing. It went on like this all day.
Finally, when he was put before the firing squad, the guard asked if he wanted a cigarette and a blindfold.
"No," the inmate said, "just get it over with."
"Well, is there anything that I can do for you before you go?" said the guard. "You didn't even want a special last meal!"
The inmate thought. "Actually," he said, "Music is my life. One thing I would really like would be to sing my favorite song, one whole time through, with no interruptions."
The guard nodded and told him to go ahead.
The inmate started, "One billion bottles of beer on the wall..."

It's a shame we can't go back and change some lives for the better. Time, though has made your mother appreciate things a lot more I'm sure.
