I work as a swim instructor at my local YMCA. I teach basics strokes (freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke), types of dives (sitting, kneeling, starting, standing), synchronized swimming techniques and water safety to classes of children ranging from age 3 to 15.
Sure, there are lots of aspects of the job to complain about- freezing water, screaming kids, constant smell of chlorine that doesn't go away- but I love my job. I get to work with young children, many of whom are newcomers to the water, and introduce them to the pool. Most of the time, the new swimmers are terrified of the water, afraid that they will sink. They grip on to the wall for dear life while they wait their turn. I try to practice strokes with them, and they cling to my shoulders.
I work with them, gradually allowing them to become more confident in the water, putting their faces in, until, finally, they let go, push off the wall, and start swimming on their own. I find it incredibly rewarding when I see how much their condifence in themselves and their abilities have gone up, and I know that they can see it too.

Learning how to swim is so important. My Dad taught me how to swim and got his Water Safety Instructor certification in college. I think your sacrifices will effect those kids lives that you touch and teach in ways that you may never know! Love and support from Alex and Abby.
