I want to share information I learned from an online friend. The more people know the better!!I didn't know all of these things and I am so glad I do now!!
Pap Smears-Current guidelines say women should begin them within 3 years of having sex for the 1st time or by age 21 (whichever comes 1st).
Mammograms should be done on a regular basis each year. However, Ultrasounds should be used in younger women since breast tissue is dense in younger women and doesn't have as much fat (it shows up white on a mammogram and is difficult to differentiate).
Without the use of contraception, 85% of women will be pregnant within 1 year.
Vaginal bleeding after menopause is never normal, and you must rule out cancer.
Essentially all women will have some fibrocystic changes in their breasts and they may hurt with one's cycle or with caffeine.
Most women's ovaries have a few follicular cysts (this is normal)
If you have post-coital (after sex) bleeding, you must rule out cancer and STDs.
A woman is likely to have some bleeding (whether she knows about it or not) after a pregnancy begins since part of the embryo (the trophoblastic layer) is setting up an interface with the mom's uterus and needs to invade into the endometrial lining.
Women have 7,000,000 ova (eggs) by the 2nd trimester of development, only 2,000,000 by birth, 400,000 by puberty, and only 400-500 of these actually mature and undergo ovulation.
Breast buds are the 1st sign of puberty in girls.
1 in 4 of you have herpes simplex 2 which causes genital lesions (most people have herpes simplex 1-causes oral and genital lesions).
You all likely have some strain of HPV or multiple strains in your body. Strains 6/11 make genital warts (condyloma accuminatum) whereas 16/18 cause cancer (squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma respectively). The vaccine Gardasil may prevent up to 70% of cervical cancers and up to 90% of genital warts. The strains which cause warts are NOT the strains which cause cervical cancer.
1 in 6 pregnancies (likely much more) end in miscarriage (roughly ½ of these have a chromosome abnormality).
1 in 15 women will suffer from Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (Stein-Leventhal Syndrome) at some time in your life.
Of the almost 20% of you who do not have health insurance, most of you are employed but not covered through work.
Menopause before age 40 is called Premature Ovarian Failure and about half of the time is autoimmune in nature (autoimmune oophoritis). If this happens to you, you may want to look for other undiagnosed autoimmune diseases.
Women should never have unopposed estrogen in hormone replacement therapy if they have an intact uterus (thus, progesterone should be added in that case).
60% of women with endometriosis have headaches, 90% have back aches.
For women under 55 years old, bladder disorders are the 2nd leading cause of loss of employment.
