"AIDS is no joke and although you may not have seen it personally yet, we are dying from it everyday. As women, it is important to protect ourselves by being educated and making smart decisions that will allow us to be successful independent people. In doing this we should care for our bodies and ensure ourselves a healthy future by using protection with each sexual encounter. It is essential that we take responsibility and not let anything or anyone stand in our way to becoming all that we can be."

That is what my aunt once said to me while having a discussion on the rapidly spreading HIV/AIDS epidemic. She stressed the importance of women, all ages, especially women of color, becoming educated about the disease and how it spreads.

Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses, and it is the leading cause of death for African-American women 25-34 years of age. As a 16-year-old, African-American, female, these numbers break my heart.

I believe that if more women spoke out and advocated for more sex education in our schools for teens, the numbers of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases would decrease significantly. I am a junior and i have not yet had any health classes in my school.

"It is imperative that we take a stance and keep our bodies healthy by protecting ourselves from the many diseases that are lurking around us." -Octavia

"The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates that there are now over 34 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide. Most of them do not know they carry HIV and may be spreading the virus to others. Here in the U.S., nearly one million people have HIV infection or AIDS roughly one out of every 250 people. At least 40,000 Americans become newly infected with HIV each year, and it is estimated that half of all people with HIV in the U.S. have not been tested and do not know they are carrying the virus.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, AIDS has killed nearly 19 million people worldwide, including some 425,000 Americans. AIDS has replaced malaria and tuberculosis as the world's deadliest infectious disease among adults and is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Over 13 million children have been orphaned by the epidemic."

WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF
:

1. ALWAYS use a condom when engaging in sex (Yes, that includes oral sex, and anal sex. (For oral sex, use dental dam.))

2. Make sure that your partner is someone that you can trust. Try not to engage sexually with someone who engages in risky behaviors.

3.
After becoming sexually active be sure to visit the GYNOCOLGIST every 6 months. Make sure your partner is getting tested as well.

4. If you and your partner decided to stop using condoms, use birth control pills and  make sure you both are getting tested reguarly. (DO NOT let anyone pressure you into engaging in unprotected sex if you are not ready. Also, birth control pills are not 100% effective and do not protect against STDs so be careful.)

You definitely have my votes on this one! As a Nurse I have been around many people with HIV. The key is educaton and knowledge. Your entry is great! I can't believe that you have not had any health classes yet... that's awful. You are a winner!
