I have a story to share about Internet Fraud. This happened to me about a year ago through Pay Pal. I received an email from Pay Pal asking me to update my credit card information because it had expired or was due to expire. I knew that I just received a new credit card since my old one expired soon so I thought nothing of it. I am very aware about phishing and reviewed the email thoroughly. I even clicked the Pay Pal link on the original email before completing all of the information that was asked in the email and it logged into Pay Pal with my username and password. There I saw all of my account information. I went back to the original email, assuming it had to be legitimate since
I was able to link to my actual Pay Pal account through the email. I began to update my information, then it asked me for the last 4 digits on the back of my credit card. I knew that this information was never asked online, should have been a MAJOR red flag but I submitted the requested information anyways. The next day, I got to work and received a call from my credit card company. They asked if I was travelling abroad in Yukoslavia. I said no, I am not, they said there were several attempts at an atm with my credit card. The thieves did not obtain any money, they took my credit card number and made a fake card to try and retrieve cash. Luckily, the card was taken by the machine and no money was taken from my account. Lesson learned. Go directly to the site if you are ever asked for any personal information to confirm that it is indeed legitimate. Who knows what other information these theives obtained of mine. Address, phone numbers, possible social security number. They can use this information to open up new credit or other fraudulant things. You must be so careful on the internet. Thank you!
