After having three kids in three years and struggling through post-partum depression, I went through a complete renewal this past year. A little history. Our family lives in a rural Nevada mining town. Not a fashion hot spot, but I think I have managed to make my own mark as a result of coming out of a few years of struggle with my identity--from the city to a rural town, college girl to mom of three in three years, and depression to happiness. I had terrible post-partum depression with my first baby 5 years ago, I had my second baby in the car on the way to the hospital 2 hours away, and with my third baby I was on bedrest for 3 months away from my family where I could be by the hospital. As any mom knows, having children can cause havoc on your mind and body. I loved having babies, but I felt so overwhelmed at times. I struggled through depression and the guilt that goes along with it. I wanted to have a part of me that was just me. I felt like if I had that, I could give more because I would have my own personal mark. Something I could feel special about. Something I worked at for myself on the side. Working out definately started me off in that direction. That was my first shoe purchase. Beautiful Adidas workout shoes I could walk in. I walked the kids in strollers, walked the dog, and took time by myself. I lost my baby weight and had time to myself each day to feel good and accomplish something. As I started to feel better, I really came out of my shell to where I am today. I dyed my hair a beautiful magenta. I just wanted to do something fun. Everywhere I go I have conversations with women about being yourself and expressing your happiness through your style. Then the shoes came. My husband asked me why shoes were such a big deal. I choose shoes that are special and that I feel define me. Roxy Pepperdines are friendly and casual. I love to just talk to anyone waiting in line with me at Walmart! And I do. I smile at people and even though they might have a grumpy face, they always smile back. My Rocket Dog Gracie pumps or Gretal Girl pumps are spunky and the teenage girls I worked with at church loved them. And my Mia red calfskin boots are just hot! I feel so confident when I wear them. With my hair and my shoes, I can express myself. I can go in my closet and choose what mood I am in. And more importantly, I can connect with others. They are conversation starters. When I was wearing a pair of my Roxy shoes, an artist at a conference I was at came up to me and told me she loved my shoes. We got to talking about her inspirations and I told her a whole bunch of shoe sites to look at. These things happen all the time. I love people, and shoes have helped me to make more connections. I just gave a pair of giraffe print skimmers to a girl who needed a little uplift. Sounds so silly, but really, if something as simple as a pair of cute shoes can connect you to a stranger for a minute, isn't that pretty amazing? Isn't that what we all need?

guess I'm too late, but I love your story, your attitude and your collection. Shoes are such the perfect symbol of where you've been and where you're going. It's terrific you hit on using them as a tool for navigating. Hope your collection takes you in unforeseen directions.

This mom is a magenta zinnia in a field of daisies. Daisies are pretty, but a magenta zinnia in the middle of them all is happy, happy, happy. Her kids are blessed to have a mom who meets trials with a smile and fun shoes.
