How do you describe a hero in 500 words?  1000 words?  My hero cannot be described in one word or one million words.  Four years ago my uncle Danny was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of thirty-nine.  He was given six months to live, if he were to make it that long.  Most people would take that as a death sentence, and give up.  Danny was nothing like most people.  He didn't strive to make the six months--he fought for much more.  Each day of his life was a struggle, but never once did I hear him complain.  He was never angry, and he never gave up.  On his very worst day he would ask me, "You doing okay?"  Danny was a man who never met a stranger, and he impacted every life he was a part of.  You could spend ten minutes or ten years with that man, and you would leave a changed person.  His passion for life was inspiring not only to me, but to everyone he met.  Behind the tired, cancer-ridden body, a strong, very much alive man could be seen in his blue eyes.  His deep, baritone voice was always caring and gentle. Danny was the kind of man that avoided calling the nurses when he needed something because he “didn’t want to be a burden.” In the many months he spent at the hospital, every nurse on staff came to know and love him. Danny made sure they never left the room without saying a heartfelt thank you.
This man was anything but ordinary. He was inspirational, selfless, thoughtful, strong, and courageous beyond belief. He saw himself as a plain, everyday man, just like any other. He never knew that he was so much more. Danny changed my life in ways I cannot explain, and I am forever grateful to him for all that he did for me. I spent countless hours with him that I will never, ever forget. The memories that I have of him are tucked neatly away into a special place of my heart. While we were trying to be strong for him and each other, Danny was trying to be strong for us. He said that if anyone had to have cancer, he was glad that it was him and not any of us. My hero never wore a cape. He didn’t scale buildings. He did not fly or have x-ray vision. Strangers may have seen him as an ordinary man, but spend just a few minutes with him and it was plain to see that Danny was anything but that. Once they found out he had cancer, he was not just extraordinary, but miraculous. Danny can be described as unbelievable, caring, generous, sincere, genuine, amazing…but none of these words are enough. The only word that even comes close is hero. Danny passed away July 12, 2007. The nurses, the doctors, acquaintances, life-long friends, his family…these people will all agree that he was definitely a hero.

Heartfelt and extraordinary. Sometimes the greatest heroes are those who have something more than super powers.
