I am immediately struck by the fact that the print should feel desolate, and yet there is an indelible hopefulness to it. The blues greens and orange hues balance the fact that the trees are dead and stripped bare. The sunset/sunrise casts beautiful, ambivalent shadows. I like the stump surrounded by mushrooms, biologically speaking a good sign, which reminds me of a picnic left behind. All in all a wonderful print.

Gina: Very nice! The more I find out about your artwork, the more I look forward to working with you in the experimental animation program at Cal Arts next year. What I find particularly interesting is the conceptual level of the work, related to the hand-cut and -printed layers that play off each other -- from the first layer of white, to magenta, yellow, blue, and finally emerald green, as you explained to me. I can see that the ways they interact relate to the larger vision you've expressed elsewhere: "I believe that many actions that occur in our society are actions we don't get to see the results of very clearly. For me, this opens this whole window of possibility. Somehow, even if we aren't in control of the outcome of our actions, the possibility for results that are inspiring, beneficial, maybe profound, exist, especially if we allow them to happen. Personal healing occurs the same way, so why can't it occur that way on a larger level?" I really appreciate this perspective and the possibilities it presents for your artistic expression, such as the print you've displayed here. I really look forward to seeing your visions in the animation you produce next year, and getting to know you as a student in the program. - Maureen Furniss, Animation Faculty, Cal Arts
