Green Mountain Conservation Group
Description:
The Green Mountain Conservation Group is an Eco-Champion paving the way for natural resource conservation and non-confrontational advocacy in the Ossipee Watershed of New Hampshire. This watershed is home to the largest stratified drift aquifer in New Hampshire; a critical drinking water resource that extends across two states. GMCG works with hundreds of volunteers each year to monitor the area’s rivers, lakes and streams, and provides research and education to municipal officials, residents, school children, summer campers, businesses, and visitors. The data volunteers collect enables a proactive approach to the protection of water resources and informed land use decisions. www.gmcg.org

Green Mountain Conservation Group is a unique forum through which officials of the six towns in the Ossipee watershed -- covering New Hampshire's largest and most important glacial (stratified-drift) aquifer -- come together and actively cooperate on a wide range of conservation issues. No other forum brings Selectmen, Conservation Commission members and Planning Board members of the six towns together as GMCG does.
Understanding its unique role as a conservation intermediary, GMCG is consistently non-confrotational, fact-based, informative (and actually, fun) in its approach. Among its most important recent activities, GMCG has pioneered the development of a region-wide manual for town management of environmental issues and has compiled a library -- shared with each town -- of all existing conservation and environmental regulations and ordinances of the six towns.
It is hard to imagine a gentler, more effective player in regional environmental management than Green Mountain Conservation Group.

Dear GMCG friends and supporters Thank you all so much for yet another outpouring to tried and true grassroots support. You have been so patient and committed in voting over the past few months on this campaign for the much needed award of $15,000. As we near the end of this campaign we are all so thankful for such strong support from our rural area of New Hampshire. Since its inception in 1997, GMCG has been working to protect New Hampshire's largest stratified drift aquifer as well as other shared natural resources. GMCG has continued to do this through the inclusion of many different citizens-- knowing that the more we all know about our resources through science and education, the more informed planning decisions we can all make. GMCG operates on a tiny budget and a staff of only 1 1/2 full time folks. This budget is raised mainly through grant writing with 10 percent coming from memberships. The reason GMCG can do what it does and have the great successes it has is because of the incredible amount of inkind donations we receive from so many other organizations and residents and from YOU our supporters. This week, GMCG has just completed its very first well sampling project--sampling over 100 individual wells across the watershed to have a snapshot of the quality of our ground water in the Ossipee Watershed. This has largely been made possible by inkind donations and an incredible outpouring of volunteer help. The Ossipee area of New Hampshire is a very rural and small region but comprised of a fiesty community commmitted to protecting our shared resources and planning for our growth based on protecting these resources. Thank you all for what you do and thank you across the Globe for your cyber support in Round one and Round two of this campaign--our first online type of campaign! Blair Folts Executive Director, GMCG

GMCG is a grass roots organization which has grown exponentially in a few years to become a force in developing synergy between many other civic, government and public and private groups working to preserve natural resources, most importantly the quality of water on a regional basis. Its educational and non confrontational approach have earned it respect and acceptance by a wide range of persons.
Good luck GMCG

Geneva, 27 of November, 2002 The United Nations Committee on Economics, Cultural and Social Rights stated “Water is fundamental for life and health. The human right to water is indispensable for leading a healthy life in human dignity. It is a pre-requisite to the realization of all other human rights.” Green Mountain Conservation Group you are a role model!

GMCG's efforts at educating adults and children in the community are ongoing, outreaching and without limits. I love it when the children in the Effingham Elementary School colored pictures for an eco-friendly calendar. I loved it even more when hiking down greenmountain they talked about the "watershed" - they had looked at the region from atop the fire tower with new eyes. They also got to view the maps that the GMCG intern carried to the firetower. Kids thinking about water at a local and global level! Kids from all over the world get to participate and learn about testing the waters from boats on Ossipee Lake. Education of adults comes in many forms, including political outreach and advocacy, as well as interesting speakers that entertain us with photos and stories and visions of owls, moose, bear, turtles and wolves. They provide valuable scientific work, including water testing that invites so many individuals of all ages from many communities into the process of the work. And new this year - Community Garden at our our own- still new - GMCG home office, built by many hands and good hearts.

The communities in the Ossipee Watershed have the GMCG to thank for organizing the widespread concern for our environment into a focused effort.

Without awareness, there cannot be concern. Concern without action cannot effect change. Action without reason cannot change effectively. Effective environmental change cannot progress without monitoring, evaluation, and understanding. The beauty of GMCG is that they lead the watershed community through step of this essential process.

The last line should read "through EVERY step of this essential process."
