Our Caramel Candy Girl
Description:
Our Recipe for Puppy Love is 1/2 Border Collie, 1/2 Golden Retriever, a "behavior problem" adopted from the pound, mixed with consistent training, lots of love, and an appreciation for eager energy. Candy’s collie brains make her too smart for her own good. The first time I put her in our pen, she flipped the latch & beat me back to the house! Like a Golden retriever, Candy loves our family passionately. She's friendly towards everyone--exuberant and loving. When I walk towards her, Candy runs energetically in circles, and then melts at my feet as I scratch behind her ear. Then I pet her soft, fluffy belly, and she wallows in heaven. To us, Candy is pure, passionate love covered in fur!

Candy says, "THANK YOU to EVERYONE who supported me in the preliminary round! Licks of love and lots of tail wags for all who support me in the finals too! If I'm selected as the winner, I will designate the Etowah Valley Humane Society (http://www.etowahvalleyhumane.org/) as the recipient of Rachel Ray's charitable donation. I am SO thankful that EVHS carefully screened applicants to find me a Forever Home, where my energetic personality is appreciated and my "herding behaviors" were channeled into acceptable loving licks. I'm MOST thankful the loving EVHS staff saved me from euthanization, and I'd like to help them find Forever Homes for peer pets. MANY licks of Love to Rachel Ray, and Isaboo too, for this great opportunity!"

Candy has very STRONG herding instincts. If more than one of us was around (which is like.. ALL the time since we homeschool), she would run circles around us, barking incessantly, and actually bite our feet and tear our clothes trying to get us gathered into a nice little group!! She was "HAPPY" and friendly about it, but you could sometimes hardly take a step! LOL! It took some doing to break her of that. When we were screened, there were more than 100 applicants for her because she is such a BEAUTIFUL dog. One of the main reasons we were chosen for her owners was because we believe ANY behavior can be trained out of a dog and said we'd only get rid of a dog for "vicious biting".. Her biting wasn't vicious.. She was just trying to do what she THOUGHT her job was!! Her prior owners apparently couldn't handle her.. and I doubt many would, but she is SO SMART, and SO LOVING, She still RUNS excitedly in circles, but she no longer barks incessantly nor bites at all. She loves to lick and share her love, and we've been mostly able to channel that to only licking hands (although she will lick people's pants legs sometimes!!---I just think that'd be awfully drying on her tongue, but she still does it!). Candy is a HAPPY girl.. THROUGH to her core.. And we love her for that!! :-D

Hi! This is Hannah, a volunteer for EVHS and YES we've been voting our hearts out for Candy. EVHS is desperate to recover from the recent theft and give the other animals of this rural southern shelter a chance at a family as loving as the one Candy has found. You have a huge team on your side, Candy!!

Candy says, "It's a high-nose, sniffing air day. Fall is in the air. I smell it! Beautiful blue skies, a breeze, and crisply cool. I spotted a bunny, a squirrel, two pretty little pooches, and five other people on my walk today. I pranced the whole way, except when I was bounding up and down trying to get the leash off to go round up that bunny! That cool air puts pep into my doggie steps, and makes me feel like a princess. Hope you've had a prancing kind of day! ♥ ♥ ♥ for you. =D"

Candy says, "We won't know if I won until Rachel Ray and the judges on the Pooch Panel pick the overall winner from the top five entries. They've got a tough job ahead of them because the top five are all fabulous, and much loved, pups! Throughout the competition, I've gotten to know the other pups and their owners, and I know each of us is a Top Dog full of puppy love! The judges will have to decide, and the rules say "Winners for Finals will be notified on or about October 22, 2009." So, we'll just have to keep our paws crossed--I'm praying for the most 'needy' party to win, whomever that may be, for only God knows which party needs the prize package the most. Maybe it will be us (my family and EVHS). Patience is not one of my best puppy traits, as evidenced when I start barking for my treats before my mom says, 'Speak!' I just can't help myself! She's got them.. I know it, she knows it, and I want them! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! Oh.. better wait until the judges decide! Sitting silently waiting in anticipation of the command... Licks of love to you!!"

Candy says, "BARK YOU!!" (And she hopes that comes across as an excited 'Thank you', because she really appreciates you visiting regularly to give her a pat on her pretty little head!)

Here is the article regarding the recent theft of $10,000 from Etowah Valley Humane Society's bank account. It has been a very stressful few weeks for the shelter, recovering from this incident, and we are desperate to make up the funds somehow. Crossing our fingers for Candy! http://www.daily-tribune.com/index.cfm?event=news.view&id=C5C4B23F-19B9-E2E2-678DD52B348ABA2E
