You are right about one thing, people do campaign a lot for other votes, just to move up in the rankings. but in the end you will notice that the rankings are not what determine the winners of most campaigns, it is decided by a very educated group of judges at Brickfish who specialize in the fields that the campaigns are covered by - art, politics, etc. Ranking among your peers is more a pat on the back, but don't let it get you down if you don't climb very high, I have seen winners that had been in 147th place.
