Latest featured review: so THAT's the story behind your wrestling ...you seem like a strong person both inside and outside and I admire you for that. Also, besides wrestling you're also a good writer!

thanks for your support.

I really don't have the answer to how a person gets into UC Berkeley because, to be honest, I didn't get in at first either.

I was a 4.0 student (which is helpful, but a 3.7 or something would work perfectly if everything else fell into place).  Thus, I was 1 of 11 valedictorians in our graduating class of 800 (big school).  I received a 2040 on my SATs.  700 on my SAT II math and 740 on my SAT II english.  For APs, I received 3 in English Lang., 4 in English Lit., 4 in Statistics, and 5 in Calculus AB.  I did not take any advanced science or history classes.  I was captain of the tennis team and was vice president for my school newspaper.  I was musically inclined with a long piano and choral background.  I was even part of 2 community service programs for all 4 years of my high school career...

And UC Berkeley rejected me.  I was crushed.  My world literally fell apart.  Boo =[  I have no idea why.  Maybe it was my personal statements? Those things are really important.

To get in, I had to write an appeal letter.  Supposedly, getting in on an appeal is very rare, but it CAN happen.  I don't think schools encourage them, but it IS possible.  These must be no more than 1 page because UCs don't have time to read anymore (esp. after all those applications).  I wrote a one page letter reiterating my grades and test scores and my accomplishments in school.  I talked about how my graduating class was the first to encounter the new SATs and how I did well despite that change.  I talked about how I had received a low score of 590 on my SAT II math, but would not settle for that score.  I studied and retook the test and received a 700.  I also mentioned that Berkeley was my first choice and I was extremely disappointed when not getting in.  Along with the letter, I attached a list of my accomplishments (including awards) and a letter of support from my English teacher.  I don't remember what she wrote, but I can never thank her enough because I feel like she really helped me get into UC Berkeley.

To be honest, though, the UC system sometimes just doesn't make any sense.  Sometimes I can't tell what they're looking for.  I thought I had it and apparently I didn't.  The second time around I didn't add too much to my accomplishments yet I got in.  I think my English teacher's letter probably really made the difference.  I believe I was blessed.  It was a real miracle and I love the fact that I'm at Berkeley now.  It's a great school.

I hope sharing my experience with you helps.  You never know what's going to happen, but just work hard and things will fall into place.  There's a reason for everything.  God has a plan.  =P It's my motto.  Haha.  Only He knows what's going on and why, but you just trust that He knows what He's doing... which He did, in my case, right?

Good luck with your future goals. =]
